Aphanomyces Test in Soil and Tissue

Aphanomyces euteiches is a destructive root rot disease of peas, lentils, alfalfa, and native legumes worldwide. It is a very persistent water mold that lives in wet or flooded areas, the spores of which can remain viable in the soil for up to 10 years. There has been an increase in the number of confirmed cases in both Saskatchewan and Alberta since it was first discovered in 2013.  Lentils and peas are the most susceptible crops and risk factors include close rotations of susceptible crops, soil moisture and compaction. Scout for symptoms in low lying areas that are prone to water-logging and test your soil to determine if the pathogen is present. Information about Aphanomyces can be found through provincial pulse commissions or government pulse crop specialists.  Read our Technical Bulletin to learn about this new disease and how we can help you confirm disease presence. Soil Seed Analysis - Key for land reclamation activity

Weed populations are established each year because of persistent seedbanks in arable soils. A knowledge of weed seedbanks is necessary, for example, to carry out studies of population dynamics, to establish weed management programs, or to avoid weed spread when transferring potentially contaminated soil.
